Fly Fishing Maine ia

Castle Island King Streamer
Fly fishing in Maine is one of the greatest experiences. Fly fishing whether it is for Brook Trout, Land locked Salmon, small mouth Bass, or Atlantic Salmon is based on the same concept of delivering the fake bait.

Pink Lady

Fly fishing with streamers simulates a live bait. A Flash strip and or rainbow strip wound into the streamer gets the fishes attention. A small group of red buck tail wound in can simulate the bait being wounded and an easy prey. Feeding Fish wait for a sign that a bait fish is vulnerable. A flash of the side of the bait is one of those trigger signs which make fish strike.

Birch Point Streamer

Fly fishing for trout on a stream , a fisherman would use a smaller pole with very light leader to deliver dry flies that mimic caddisfly, black fly, stonefly and various other dry fly insects. These can be in either adult or larva stage of growth depending on what month and water temperature. Even small streamers may be used on brooks and streams early in the open water season.

Getting Started -

Go to your nearest sporting store that sells fishing gear. The store will have a selection of different fly poles. They can match you up with the right size pole , reel, and proper fly line for going after the fish you want.

  • Buy a pole, reel, fly line, backing line, leader line, and a few streamers or flies to get started.
  • Knowing a couple knots that are used for splicing fly line to leaders , backing line to fly line and tying on the streamer or fly is a requirement.

I use a double loop or improved end loop with a bowline for splicing the leader to fly line and the backing line to fly line. A blood knot will also work. An improved clinch knot is used for attaching the fly.
