Fishing Maine ia
Rivers

River fishing in Maine for Atlantic Salmon is one of the best fishing thrills. You can fish with just waders at any one of the salmon pools and don't necessarily need a boat.

There are 5000 rivers , streams and brooks totaling over 37,000 miles of flowing water here in the state of Maine.

Maine has six major rivers. Rivers and streams offer much more diversity of fish species than the lakes and ponds.

Most of the rivers in Maine can be best fished by boat or canoe. The rips or quick waters and Salmon pools can be fished from shore with waders.

Fishing for Atlantic salmon can be from the shore or by canoe/boat anchored against the currents. Atlantic salmon are Catch and release only, guide lines and fish registers are posted by every boat landing along the rivers.

On the smaller rivers in summer fishing for and catching a trout or landlocked salmon can be accomplished by finding those cold springs or spring fed brooks that run into the rivers. These cold water spots are where you'll find these game fish that love cold water.

At the boat landings along the rivers there are registration boxes to enter your catch information so the State Fish biologists can have an idea of the numbers that make it up the river in various locations.

A fly fishing friend was hooked on fishing the Penobscot River for Atlantic salmon. He fished before work in the morning , after work in the evenings, and on weekends. This fishing enthusiast wore the eyelets out on his fly pole and had to replace them on the second year. Yet, he has never eaten even one Atlantic salmon that I know of and released all he caught.
